Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment is close to beginning operating in Las Vegas following approval from the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Members of the board voted unanimously to recommend the Nevada Gaming Commission to approve the business enterprise that belongs to Connecticut’s Mohegan Indian Tribe to begin gaming activities at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.

The Gaming Control Board approved Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment on its regular meeting of October 7. The Nevada Gaming Commission is set to review the recommended approval next Thursday, October 22.

The company will run the casino inside Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, a property that closed in February for renovation and is anticipated to reopen January 15. Formerly called Hard Rock Las Vegas, the premises is located on the east side of the Las Vegas Strip.

Virgin Hotels will operate the casino resort’s 1,110 guest rooms

Virgin Hotels will operate the casino resort’s 1,110 guest rooms, brought in by JC Hospitality, the owner and landlord of the property. It will become part of the Curio Collection of Hilton Hotel.

The building will have no Mohegan brand, except for an electronic signage with the name outside the premises. However, several signs will be inside the 60,000-square-foot casino space for customers to know who the operator is.

Since Mohegan Gaming is going to run the casino from another company on a leasing basis, the tribe doesn’t have to sign a gaming compact with Nevada, said the board’s Chairwoman Sandra Douglas Morgan during the online meeting. Moreover, the property is not situated on sovereign tribal land.

Several celebrity chefs will manage the gaming property’s restaurants. However, the property will have no poker room amenity. The US subsidiary of UK-based Betfred Group operates the company’s sportsbook, which is currently going through the licensure process.

Mohegan and Betfred signed a partnership agreement in July

Mohegan and Betfred signed a partnership agreement in July, giving the bookmaker the exclusive rights to provide wagering on sports at the tribe’s new venue at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.

Mohegan Gaming is currently heading operations at Resorts Atlantic City in New Jersey, Fallsview Casino Resort in Niagara Falls, in Canada, tribal casinos in Louisiana and Washington, on behalf of other Indian tribes, and its resorts in Connecticut and Pennsylvania, the flagship Mohegan Sun Resort in Uncasville and the Mohegan Sun Poconos in Wilkes-Barre.

Currently, the company is building a $5 billion resort in South Korea at Incheon International Airport. The resort could boost the company’s visitations to Sin City since Koreans represent a good portion of Mohegan’s Canadian casino.

Mohegan is also eying another airport, the former Hellenikon International Airport near Athens, Greece. The tribe is on the verge of getting an integrated resort license.
