Mohegan Gaming To Become First Tribe To Operate Las Vegas Casino

Las Vegas is on the verge of getting the city’s first tribal casino. The Mohegan Tribe is stepping in to run the casino’s operations for the newly renovated Hard Rock. Last Year Virgin Hotels announced acquiring the Hard Rock affirming that Mohegan will be taking over operations of the 60,000-square-foot casino floor. Virgin is partnering with JC Hospitality as well in hopes of making the resort attractive enough to lure guests to the casino. It was announced last month that by February 2020, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino located on the Strip will re-launch as Virgin Hotel. Terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed as the agreement awaits approval from the Nevada Gaming Commission

Branson has previous experience operating companies in many different fields, yet gambling is one area where he has very little experience. The Mohegan Tribe is stepping in to fill the gap bringing in their knowledge and experience. Mohegan Tribe is already operating two tribal casinos in Connecticut as well as Sun Pocono Casino in Pennsylvania and finally Resorts Casino in Atlantic City. The new partnership makes the Mohegan Tribe the first Native American tribe to run a casino in the Las Vegas Strip corridor.

According to Tribe interim chairman James Gessner Jr, he states that

“this new and exciting relationship brings together two ‘Best in Class’ organisations and continues the Mohegan Tribe’s tradition of blazing new trails for others to follow.”

Strong on entertainment

In statements by Mario Kontomerkos, CEO of Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment he mentions that

“entertainment for us is probably one of our biggest calling cards. We’re one of the biggest providers of headliner entertainment in the industry with more than 1,500 shows per year. You can imagine that the fact that there’s a very successful venue there for concert entertainment is very appealing to us, so I think you’re going to see more of that concert entertainment as we play a part in this.”

Mohegan’s 1,600-room resort in Connecticut is the company’s flagship property located on the banks of the Thames River on the forested 240-acre reservation.

Attracting new customers to Las Vegas

Mohegan is expecting that their international exposure will help attract customers to Las Vegas through the company’s Momentum Loyalty card program. “We’ve got access to very affluent and very mobile demographics, global demographics,” Kontomerkos said. “When you add that together with Virgin, which also has a very significant, similarly positioned database with all its businesses, I think you have a very powerful opportunity to drive some new visits and new customers into Las Vegas to this property.”
