Bets taken after International baseball games began could cost Vegas casino hundreds of thousands of dollars

Last Sunday, the wrong start times of Korean and Chinese baseball games were posted causing sports books one of the larges losses. The incorrect information was announced based on manual entry. 

Seven longtime Las Vegas bookmakers had their biggest loss of around $250,000 in winning wagers. 

John Murray, Westgate sportsbook director said, “It’s happened to all of us. I think every sportsbook probably since the beginning of time has dealt with this as some point.”

He added, “We’ve had past post situations where our employees put in the wrong time or put in the wrong number or they forgot to close something. It’s a manual entry and humans are going to make mistakes.”

50 wagers were placed near the Bellagio between 1:30 and 3:00 am while the announced games were played between 1 and 2:00 a.m. 

It is noteworthy to mention that one of the bets was a $250 10-leg parlay which paid out $137,107.

The case is currently being investigated by the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Sportsbooks will have to wait for the board’s ruling according to their findings.

Dealing with bets on sports in foreign countries

Gambling experts believe that dealing with bets on sports in foreign countries can start getting tricky. Having to deal with the different time zones creates a small margin of error. 

Casino officials eventually discovered the error Sunday and terminated payments, yet it’s unclear how many winning tickets were already cashed before that.


ROAR Digital, which manages BetMGM and partners will all MGM properties, including Bellagio, announced “A trading error was identified and addressed. We’re working with Nevada Gaming authorities on this matter.”

A similar mistake was committed by Robert Walker years ago. “I still haven’t gotten over some mistakes I made at The Mirage 20 years ago”

“There is no worse feeling than when you see a bet come across on a game that’s already started,” Robert Walker. 

20 years ago Walker forgot to manually close out the halftime line, so bets kept coming in. 

“A college football bettor once placed a $3,000 halftime wager on LSU late in the fourth quarter, when the bet couldn’t lose.”
